So the pharmacy program is a four year program and the first three years are very traditional classroom type courses. The fourth year is totally completely experiential. We have introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences, which students are introduced to community practice, hospital practice, as well as medication counseling and clinical work in their fourth year, which we call Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences. And so they go out into the field. And they are in retail settings, hospital settings, long-term care settings, management settings, industry settings, all of the different various opportunities that a student could have in pharmacy.
In undergrad, I wasn't able to really get involved. But now that I'm in College of Pharmacy, I've been more invested in deeply involved, and that's kind of built my support group, and had me meet people that I probably wouldn't have met, if I just kind of went to class and went home. And through my College of Pharmacy experiences and some of my classes, one of my professors was able to recommend me for a job as a pharmacy intern. So that was pretty cool.
So at Xavier Pharmacy School, some of the experiences or opportunities that students receive, with being able to be mentored or if there's research, any type of thing like that and they can set you up. For example for myself, I wanted to become a clinical pharmacist. So I was teamed up with a program called COE, Centers of Excellence Research Scholar for Minorities. This is something you have to apply to, but within that you get a one-on-one experience for research, which is very difficult for a student to be able to have that experience.
In Fall of 2021, we'll be starting our Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences Program. That program will be a two year master degree program, which will emphasize pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutics and kind of prep our students for eventual employment in the pharmaceutical industry.
